7 Anime Characters with Weapons Bigger Than They Are – Ranked by Pure Contrast

Posted on by Daniel Murphy

When it comes to anime, oversized weapons are practically a genre of their own. But sometimes, the contrast between the wielder and the weapon is so extreme, it makes you do a double take. Here’s a roundup of 7 characters whose weapons are straight-up massive compared to their own bodies—and we’ll let you decide which one takes the cake!

1. Shinoa Hiiragi

From Seraph of the End, Shinoa may be small in stature, but don’t be fooled by her purple hair, giant ribbon, and those intelligent crimson eyes. Born as a human test subject, her sarcastic and aloof nature hides a painful belief formed in childhood: “Someone like me… no one would ever care if I lived or died.”

Her weapon, the cursed gear Shikama Dōji, transforms into a huge scythe in battle. Outside of combat, it takes the form of a small key-like charm. It allows her to summon demons and sense enemies, though using it drains her strength—a tradeoff that suits her style of mid-to-long-range combat.

2. Kougyoku Ren

From Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Kougyoku is the third princess of the Kou Empire. She’s a bit twisted, emotionally intense, and fiercely loyal to her brother. Once ostracized in the royal palace, she didn’t let that define her. Instead, she forged her own path and earned the loyalty of many with her strength and optimism.

Her Metal Vessel is the Ruyi Jingu Bang, a weapon that can expand and shrink at will. In battle, it becomes a giant, flexible blade that can cut through hordes of enemies with ease. Her aggressive and fearless fighting style turns her into a whirlwind of destruction—even against towering opponents.

3. Sukuna Gojou

From K: Return of Kings, Sukuna may look like your typical rich kid, but beneath that lies a turbulent soul. As a member of the Green Clan “Jungle,” he wields a scythe that glows an eerie green in combat—usually disguised as a harmless stick.

Though born into privilege, Sukuna felt suffocated and unloved. Even the “friend” who brought him joy turned out to be bought with money. Disillusioned, he ran away and threw himself into the chaos of “Jungle.” His enormous scythe, combined with his nimble moves, makes him a truly unpredictable fighter.

4. Maka Albarn

From Soul Eater, Maka is the child of a weapon father and human mother, making her a hybrid who can both wield and become a weapon. Naturally serious and polite, she’s top of her class—but when angered, watch out for her infamous “Maka Chop” to the skull.

Her weapon, a massive scythe, is her partner Soul Eater, who transforms into weapon form. Even as a teenager, she can wield traditional Scythe Meister techniques like “Witch Hunt” and its area-attack variant “Witch Hunt Slash.” Eventually, she unlocks the ultra-rare “Angel Soul,” appearing in only one in fifty million people.

5. Black★Rock Shooter

From Black★Rock Shooter, she’s the alternate-world counterpart of Mato Kuroi. With pale skin, uneven twin tails, and a long black coat, she’s a striking figure. Her left eye sometimes blazes with blue flame, and deep scars mark her waist—her greatest weakness.

Black★Rock Shooter

Her signature weapon? The Black★Rock Cannon, a rock-launching mega-cannon that fires 20 shots per second. It can also morph into a massive gatling gun. Sometimes, she even dual-wields with a shimmering sword. Heavy artillery has never looked so graceful.

6. Ruby Rose

From RWBY, Ruby is known for her black-and-red gothic outfit, black tights, and red cloak. Curious and upbeat with a bit of an airhead vibe, she’s fearless in trying new things and always ready to stand up for justice.

Ruby Rose

Her weapon, Crescent Rose, is a massive high-caliber sniper rifle/scythe hybrid that she built herself. It folds up and tucks neatly behind her belt, hidden beneath her cloak—until it’s time for action, when it transforms into a deadly, high-speed scythe or gun.

7. Ririchiyo Shirakiin

From Inu × Boku SS, Ririchiyo is a pale-skinned beauty with flowing black-purple hair. Often stalked by weirdos and creeps, she’s grown used to being the object of obsession. Due to her high-status family, she developed a habit of acting cold and haughty—but beneath that is a deeply caring soul.

Ririchiyo Shirakiin

Her weapon is a naginata (polearm), which she only wields during her “ancestral awakening.” In this form, she grows black goat horns, dons a red-patterned scarf, wears shrine maiden attire with a demon mask at her waist, and fights fearlessly in traditional sandals.

So, who has the most dramatic weapon-to-body-size ratio? Whether it’s Ruby’s transforming scythe-rifle, Shinoa’s demon-possessed gear, or Ririchiyo’s mystical naginata, each of these characters proves that size—and style—definitely matter in anime.
